ACT NOW: Stop the Backdoor Attack on Muni Wireless
May 27 update: This action alert has been superceded. New action alert here.
ACTION ALERT
Action is needed now to save municipal wireless in Texas.
Several controversial telecom bills, including the provisions of HB 789 that ban muni wireless, have been attached to the House version of SB 408, the "sunset bill" for the State Public Utility Commission. This maneuver, if successful, would bypass Senate hearings (and, thus, public input) on the controversial provisions.
Take Action Now
Contact the Governor's office and let him know that you oppose HB 789 wherever it rears its ugly head since it:
- reduces availability of high-speed internet to cities and towns
- hurts rural areas that lack competitive high-speed internet
- reduces local control over necessary infrastructure
You may need to remind them that HB 789 has been attached to a bill (SB 408) that is in Calendars committee.
Please contact the Governors Office - Citizen's Opinion Hotline at 800-252-9600.
The following representatives are members of the House Calendars committee. They will decide if and when the full House will vote on this frankenstein bill. If you are represented by one of these members, please contact them and tell them you oppose HB 789 wherever it rears its ugly head. You may need to remind them that HB 789 has been attached to a bill (SB 408) that is in their Calendars committee.
