Consumers Union Focus on Texas
The Consumers Union, an independent, nonprofit testing and information organization serving only consumers, has begun to focus on HB 789 and the effort to outlaw community Internet in Texas.
The Consumers Union has an active campaign to support community Internet across the country. They noted:
Cities, towns and counties across the country want to bridge the digital divide and are exploring offering municipal broadband networks so everyone can connect to the educational, economic and cultural benefits of the Internet. [...] Telephone and cable companies are trying to dominate Internet connections to the home by keeping out the competition.
To support the campaign in Texas, the CU has posted an instant response form that you can use to send a message to Texas state legislators. They also have released a summary of their opposition to the HB 789 community network ban.
If you haven't contacted your state representative yet, you can use that CU form to do so right now.
